
Sara Male
Acting Principal Cello Weeks 4-6
Sara Male is a cellist, educator, and arts leader whose career spans performance, teaching, and arts leadership. She holds degrees from the Victoria Conservatory of Music in Canada, where she received the Principal Emeritus Prize, Rutgers University, and the Mannes College of Music in New York City. A sought-after soloist and chamber musician, she has performed in major venues throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia.
Sara is the founding cellist of the Lancaster-based Newstead Trio, which performed internationally from 1993–2018 and debuted at Carnegie Hall in 2001. She is also co founder of Duo Chiaroscuro with pianist Maria Corley. This ensemble is dedicated to innovative and inclusive performance and created
*Silence Optional*, a multi-sensory concert series designed for neurodiverse audiences.
She serves as principal cellist of the York Symphony Orchestra, assistant principal cellist of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, and regularly performs with regional orchestras throughout Pennsylvania. Sara is Adjunct Professor of Cello at Lafayette College and is in high demand as a private teacher. She is the recipient of the LLMEA 2022 Teacher of the Year Award.
In addition to her performing and teaching career, Sara is Executive Director of the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble and Chair of the Board of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, knitting, and performing chamber music with her husband, violist Peter Kenote of the New York
Philharmonic.
